Medieval Graffiti

Modern graffiti is often seen as transgressive and moronic. However, look closely in the light of a torch at the walls of our historic buildings, trees, caves and rock faces and you will see a world of graffiti left that illuminates the psychology of our ancestors. The study of historic graffiti enables us to hear the lost voices of ordinary individuals through their images of daisy wheels, ships sailing across the walls, knights drawing their swords, demons stalking the stonework and every animal imaginable.

However, within the pages of Anglo-Saxon leech books, we can find signs of a darker, more sinister realm. Here is a world where healers need not only medicinal plants, but also the knowledge of charms and incantations to combat an otherworldly foe that spells trouble for both man and beast.

An Occult history of Alderley Edge

Rising 300 feet above the Cheshire Plain, the sandstone ridge of Alderley Edge, enjoyed in the daytime by countless walkers and sightseers, becomes at night a very different and magickal place. Filled with a rich folkloric history, it has attracted numerous folk, including Bob Clay-Egerton's Coven of the Scales and Alex Sanders. In more recent times many Wiccan and eclectic pagan groups still work this magickal place. Hidden beneath the Edge's peaceful woodland, over 11 miles of mines traverse a sacred underworld used historically by some of those occult groups. That use continues to this day. The talk will focus on being an introduction to the Edge, covering the physical Landscape, the magickal and mundane history of the area, some of the folklore attached to it and some personal observations and experiences from one who has worked the Edge for many years.
